Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
The upgrade of an item lets players increase the level of their equipped items like trinkets, armor, weapons and weapons within a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Weapons have a higher trade value when upgraded fully due to the fact that they cause more damage. However, there are some weapons that offer a high value of trade even without upgrading due to their useful stats for certain builds (e.g. Whistan's Shield is a great shield for FB Sorcs. There are also some unique and set items that don't need upgrading since they have low requirements or benefits from upgrading (e.g. Goldwrap Naj's puzzler's staff.
Certain sets have set bonuses that can provide additional effects if Link wears the entire set. They are beneficial in certain situations, like when exploring the Gerudo Desert or in a Dungeon. The Desert Voe Set, for instance, comes with an Stealth Up feature that makes it easier to sneak by enemies.
Universal upgrades can be used on any type of equipment. These upgrades offer smaller rewards than the ones that are restricted to certain types however, they are more easy to obtain. Some of these upgrades are gems, which can be crafted in a jeweler, and they can be used in any trinket slot. In ideal scenarios, the game would give more information about an upgrade in its compare interface, for instance "X stats gained, the loss of X stats." This isn't practical to implement because of the complexity of the process of comparing. There's not enough space to do it properly within the UI.
A script that examines an item's upgrade requirements before allowing the item to be upgraded is an alternative option. This is a good option for systems that have a relatively small number of upgradable items and simple upgrade dependencies. One example is a sword which can be upgraded from Sword +1 to Sword +2. Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be connected to gathering tools. Most upgrade components can only be replaced by an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. They can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.
Depending on the kind of item, upgrading it could cost Dilithium or gold. Additionally, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum level for upgrades. The upgrade to the highest level can be expensive, especially when you're upgrading PvE gear.
Item upgrades can also change the ammunition type of a weapon or size of the damage die and size, alter its operational or unwieldy specific weapon property, or change its hand requirement. Certain upgrades can even alter the appearance of a weapon.
